An IP rating is a useful starting point when choosing an exterior light because it describes how the enclosure resists contact with solid particles and water. It helps you compare fittings intended for a sheltered porch, an exposed wall or a garden path, but it is only one part of a safe installation. The mounting position, cable entry, drainage, local weather and the manufacturer’s instructions all affect whether a fitting is suitable for a particular place.

Before comparing products, look closely at the area during rain and normal use. Water can reach a fitting from above, rebound from paving, travel along a wall or arrive from irrigation. A light beneath a deep canopy faces very different conditions from one mounted beside an open driveway, even when both are described simply as outdoor lights.

What IP65 means

The first digit describes protection against solid objects and dust; the second describes protection against water. An IP65 enclosure is generally considered dust-tight and protected against water jets. That makes IP65 a practical specification for many wall lights, bollards and pathway fittings that experience ordinary outdoor weather.

It does not mean the product should be submerged, installed where water collects permanently or cleaned with unrestricted high-pressure equipment. Ratings describe tested conditions, so the fitting still needs to be installed in the orientation and manner intended by its manufacturer.

Match the rating to the location

A covered porch is usually less demanding than an open coastal wall or a fitting beside a sprinkler. Consider direct rain, splashback, standing water, wind-driven dust, salt air and how easily the product can be inspected. In coastal locations, corrosion resistance and the quality of the finish may matter as much as the water rating.

A higher rating is not automatically the best answer if the shape, materials or mounting method do not suit the location. Choose the complete fitting for the environment rather than treating one number as a guarantee.

Check the whole installation

The published rating applies to the complete fitting as tested. Cable entries, seals, junction boxes, fasteners and the mounting surface still matter once it is installed. A poorly sealed connection behind an appropriately rated light can still allow moisture into the electrical system or building fabric.

Read the supplied instructions, confirm the stated voltage and use a qualified electrician wherever mains wiring is involved. Inspect exterior fittings periodically for damaged seals, loose fixings or corrosion.
